Hierarchical Matrices: Approximation, Adaptivity and Application to Partial Differential Equations

In the first part we will give a short introduction to hierarchical matrices (H-Matrices) based on the construction and arithmetics. The second part is devoted to the approximation of operators in the H-Matrix-format. The third part will discuss possible adaptive arithmetics and at last we present numerical results for some elliptic operators.
