ELLAM as a solver for convection-dominated transport problems

Characteristic methods are very well suited for solving
convection-dominated transport problems. One very promising scheme in
this field is the Euler-Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM)
which features global mass conservation and a natural way of including
both Dirichlet- and Neumann-boundary-conditions.
In this talk we will give a short introduction to the ELLAM-scheme and
a finite volume variant thereof (FV-ELLAM). We will then focus on the
problem that both methods do not guarantee the monotonicity of the
solution and discuss ways to reduce this error.
