  On the ellipticity of the single layer potential in linear elastostatics

The stability and error analysis of Galerkin boundary element methods is mainly based on the ellipticity of the underlying boundary integral operator. We prove that the single layer potential operator in planar linear elasticity is elliptic when assuming an appropriate scaling condition for the computational domain. In general the ellipticity of the single layer potential degenerates for almost incompressible materials. Using results for the Stokes system we can construct a robust boundary element method in this case.
