  A New ILU-type Smoother for Anisotropic Problems

Discrete systems arising from elliptic PDEs can be solved efficiently using multigrid methods. In many cases of practical interest the resulting linear equations exhibit strong isotropies. We present a new ILU-type smoother for this type of problems. Its robust smoothing property is investigated. Unlike the ILU(beta) scheme introduced in [Wittum 89], the scheme does not require a damping parameter. It can be easily extended to problems arising from systems of PDEs. Numerical experiments demonstrate its excellent smoothing properties.
