Numerics of multi-scale problems involving conservation laws
If large differences in scales occur in a problem modeled by differential equations this generally leads to difficulties in numerical algorithms approximating their solutions. These difficulties are generally refered to as the occurence of stiffness. Systems of hyperbolic conservation laws may involve widely varying characteristic speeds. Also they could be coupled to other physical mechanisms introducing further scales. A typical case are reactive flows involving stiff source terms. The talk will focus on issues such as wrong shock speeds, unphysical states, large time steps and solution adaptivity.
