Some remarks on the time dependent harmonic map equation

Variants of the time dependent (parabolic) harmonic map equation arise in several applications such as magnetostriction and fibre spinning. In the present lecture I shall discuss some relationships between recently discovered singularities, modelling questions, the nonuniqueness of initial-boundary value problems, and the construction of solutions.
