Weak convergence of minors

Using calculus of variations techniques, it is shown that if tex2html_wrap_inline30 converge to a function u in tex2html_wrap_inline34, where tex2html_wrap_inline36 is an open, bounded subset of tex2html_wrap_inline38, if the sequence of all minors tex2html_wrap_inline40 is equi-bounded in tex2html_wrap_inline42, and if tex2html_wrap_inline44 converge to a function f weakly in tex2html_wrap_inline48, then

This result was previously obtained by Giaquinta, Modica and Soucek using tools from Geometric Measure Theory, and it is sharp. In particular, for all tex2html_wrap_inline52, tex2html_wrap_inline54, for all tex2html_wrap_inline56, and for every tex2html_wrap_inline58
