Dietrich Braess: An open problem in multigrid theory

Cascadic multigrid algorithms or the theory by Bramble, Pasciak, and Xu provide approximate solutions that are good in the energy norm. Does such an approximation help when we want a solution that is also good in the L2 norm or is the effort for getting the latter as large as with a start from scratch?
