  Sergio Conti: Soft elasticity in nematic elastomers: Analysis and computation

Nematic elastomers combine the typical entropic elastic properties of cross-linked polymer networks with the orientational instabilities of liquid crystals. Their macroscopic semi-soft elastic response is accompanied by the formation of fine-scale microstructure with a characteristic striped pattern. We combine the analytical evaluation of the quasiconvex envelope of the microscopic energy with finite-element numerical computations to study the local composition of the microstructure and the macroscopic elastic response.
