Leader of W2 Max Planck Research Group in Nonlinear Algebra

The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) invites applications for the leadership of a

W2 Max Planck Research Group

in Nonlinear Algebra

MPI MiS is a research institute located in Leipzig, Germany. Our research advances outward looking mathematics. We develop mathematical methods for applications, and we translate problems from the sciences, humanities and engineering into mathematical challenges. We are committed to innovative fundamental research, and to transferring concepts and structures from mathematics into other academic fields.

We are looking for young researchers holding a doctoral degree who are about to develop their own research agenda. They should have already demonstrated their scientific independence by relevant publications. Candidates should have some international research experience. There is no teaching duty but the possibility to teach an advanced course in our graduate school. German language skills are not required.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of employees with severe disabilities in its workforce. Applications from persons with severe disabilities are expressly desired.

The successful candidate will be offered a Max Planck Research Group for a period of five years. This includes group leader position – paid on the basis of remuneration group W 2 of the Federal Civil Service Remuneration Act (Bundesbesoldungsgesetz) – and additional resources for one postdoctoral fellow, guests, workshops and travel. Participation in our doctoral program “International Max Planck Research School on Mathematics in the Sciences” is highly appreciated and provides further funding for PhD students.

Although scientific independence of the group leader is guaranteed, the group is expected to cooperate closely with the research group of Bernd Sturmfels.

Our offer:

  • Scientifically independent W2 position as Max Planck Research Group Leader.
  • Funding for one postdoctoral fellow, guests, workshops and travel.
  • Application deadline: February 1, 2020
  • Starting date: October 1, 2020 or later
