Finiteness of totally geodesic submanifolds

Abstract
I will give a brief survey of results about finiteness of totally geodesic submanifolds in negative curvature, also touching on some related work in both Teichmuller dynamics and Hodge theory. I will also give some motivation for being interested in totally geodesic submanifolds and give some indication of future directions.
