My name is Magali Jay. I am a postdoc in Anna Wienhard's group at the MPI MiS since September 2024.
Before that, I did my PhD in Marseille. I studied dynamical systems called tiling billiards, which were motivated by the discovery of metamaterials with negative index of refraction. Depending on the context, I could understand some of their behaviors by studying the dynamics of a type of maps called interval exchange transformations with flips, or the geodesic flow on half translation surfaces, which are surfaces with a flat metric.
Coming to the MPI, I broaden my mathematical interests to other questions linking dynamics and geometry, for example about excursions of the geodesic flow on hyperbolic non compact surfaces and Anosov flows in dimension 3.
I enjoy sharing mathematical enthusiasm outside academics and I am happy to have taken part of the long night of Science in Leipzig with colleagues.
Working at the MPI is a delightful experience, with a really helping and supporting staff and nice people. Moving to Leipzig meant improving my german, which I am appreciating a lot, in particular thanks to the courses we have here with Mirke Olschewski. Between two travels, I enjoy the artistic opportunities in Leipzig, from music to theater and museums with friends.
