Luca Sodomaco

Luca Sodomaco did his undergraduate studies at the Università Degli Studi di Trieste where he was mentored by Emilia Mezzetti. He got his PhD in Mathematics at the Università Degli Studi di Firenze in 2020, under the supervision of Giorgio Ottaviani. Since December 2019, he is a post-doc at Aalto University in Finland in the research group held by Kaie Kubjas. He is interested in the applications of algebraic geometry to optimization theory and statistics. In his PhD thesis, he worked on Euclidean Distance degrees of algebraic varieties, with a particular interest in varieties of low-rank matrices and tensors.

Luca visited MPI Leipzig in 2018 for the Macaulay2 Workshop and the Summer School on Numerical Computing in Algebraic Geometry. In 2019 he attended the Workshop on Low-rank Optimization and Applications. In 2021 he was invited to speak in the Nonlinear Algebra Seminar Online.

In the free time, he likes playing football, skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer, but mainly he enjoys spending time in the kitchen preparing Italian and other European dishes!
