An introduction to the Onsager conjecture

Abstract

This course aims at introducing the celebrated Onsager conjecture on the conservation of the kinetic energy for solutions of the incompressible Euler equations.

We will focus on the following topics:

  • relation with the theory of incompressible turbulence;
  • rigidity results (Constantin--E--Titi, Duchon--Robert and others...);
  • flexibility results by convex integration (De Lellis--Székelyhidi and others...);
  • open problems.

No particular prerequisites are needed, except basic knowledge in functional analysis and PDE.
