Intersection Theory in Action
Summer School and Workshop at MPI-MiS Leipzig
The degrees of algebraic varieties and finite maps arise naturally in many applications. For example, they govern the algebraic complexity of optimization problems (e.g. maximum likelihood and Euclidean distance degrees). Intersection theory provides powerful tools for computing these degrees.
The 4-day summer school covers such tools. We will learn about Chow rings of toric varieties and Grassmannians, and about the Giambelli-Thom-Porteous formula. Theory and practice are bridged by computations, both symbolic and numerical. The school is followed by a 2-day workshop on recent advances at the interface of applied algebra and intersection theory.
Registration will follow soon.
