Another successful and varied summer school has come to an end. Under the title “Algomanet Summer School on Emerging Methods in Extremal Combinatorics”, doctoral students and researchers from Algomanet partner universities as well as additional guests gathered in Leipzig to exchange ideas, discuss current research, and expand their professional networks.
A key objective of the summer school was to introduce doctoral researchers to two emerging techniques in combinatorics - sublinear expanders and asymptotic enumeration via graph containers and entropy. The event was initiated by our group leader and Alexander von Humboldt Professor Daniel Kráľ.
"I am delighted to see such strong participation from universities across the Algomanet network, which we have recently become a part of, and beyond, including Princeton University and University of California, Davies. My sincere thanks go to Matija Bucić and Jinyoung Park, our two lecturers, to Jean-Marc Mues, who took an excellent care of arrangements related to the school, to Filip Kučerák, who kindly agreed to be in charge of exercise sessions for Jinyoung’s lectures, as well as to everyone who took part. I am particularly happy that we were able to make arrangements that allowed Jinyoung Park to make her trip to Leipzig compatible with her parental responsibilities," said Dan Kráľ.
The scientific program featured lectures by Jinyoung Park, Assistant Professor at the Courant Institute in New York who received the 2023 Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize, and Matija Bucić, Assistant Professor at the University of Vienna who received the 2025 European Prize in Combinatorics. The sessions were designed in an interactive format, alternating between lectures, exercises, and discussion rounds, which encouraged active participation and scientific exchange.
The summer school was further enriched by a Felix Klein Colloquium at Leipzig University, where Jinyoung Park gave a talk titled “The Convexity Conjecture, the Kahn-Kalai Conjecture, and Introduction to k-Thresholds.”
Beyond the academic program, informal exchange was an integral part of the event. A joint dinner at Leipzig’s Moritzbastei provided a relaxed setting for participants to continue discussions and build new connections.
Algomanet is a network based on collaboration among several research groups in the areas of discrete algorithms, discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, which all are based at Central European universities. The network was founded in 2019 and currently includes Charles University in Prague, Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Leipzig University, Masaryk University in Brno, and University of Warsaw.
