To promote mathematical research by fostering collaborations with researchers in developing countries, the association CIMPA International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics supports a variety of activities, including the organization of summer schools. This summer, Şefika Kuzgun and co-organizers took on the challenge of organizing a CIMPA school on Probability and Analysis in Türkiye, a branch of mathematics that has received relatively little attention in Türkiye and its neighboring countries.
Thanks to its geographical position and relatively accessible visa policies, Türkiye provides an ideal location for students from the Middle East and North Africa, while also being easily reachable from Europe. This made the school a unique meeting point for students and researchers from different countries and scientific traditions. The summer school brought together 7 professors, 5 teaching assistants, and 36 students, 10 of whom are affiliated with universities in developing countries such as Algeria, Armenia, Egypt, India, Iraq, and Morocco.
The main funding for the school was provided by CIMPA and ICMS (The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences) through their newly launched Mathematics for Humanity Worldwide program, complemented by additional support from IMU (International Mathematical Union) and EMS (European Mathematical Society). Further contributions came from institutions including the University of Bath, INRIA, ENS, CIMAT, MPI MiS, University Paris Nord, and TU Delft, which supported the travel, accommodation, and expenses of several organizers, instructors, and teaching assistants. The Feza Gürsey Institute for Physics and Mathematics generously provided the lecture theatre free of charge for the duration of the school, as well as subsidized accommodation and meals.
The school was very well received by students, who described the experience as both academically enriching and socially valuable.
A heartfelt thank you to Şefika Kuzgun and the organizing team for making this wonderful event possible!
