Şefika Kuzgun, Postdoctoral researcher in Felix Otto's group "Pattern Formation, Energy Landscapes and Scaling Laws"
To promote mathematical research by fostering collaborations with researchers in developing countries, the association CIMPA International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics supports a variety of activities, including the organization of summer schools. This summer, Şefika Kuzgun and co-organizers took on the challenge of organizing a CIMPA school on Probability and Analysis in Türkiye, a branch of mathematics that has received relatively little attention in Türkiye and its neighboring countries.
Thanks to its geographical position and relatively accessible visa policies, Türkiye provides an ideal location for students from the Middle East and North Africa, while also being easily reachable from Europe. This made the school a unique meeting point for students and researchers from different countries and scientific traditions. The summer school brought together 7 professors, 5 teaching assistants, and 36 students, 10 of whom are affiliated with universities in developing countries such as Algeria, Armenia, Egypt, India, Iraq, and Morocco.
The main funding for the school was provided by CIMPA and ICMS (The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences) through their newly launched Mathematics for Humanity Worldwide program, complemented by additional support from IMU (International Mathematical Union) and EMS (European Mathematical Society). Further contributions came from institutions including the University of Bath, INRIA, ENS, CIMAT, MPI MiS, University Paris Nord, and TU Delft, which supported the travel, accommodation, and expenses of several organizers, instructors, and teaching assistants. The Feza Gürsey Institute for Physics and Mathematics generously provided the lecture theatre free of charge for the duration of the school, as well as subsidized accommodation and meals.
The school was very well received by students, who described the experience as both academically enriching and socially valuable.
A heartfelt thank you to Şefika Kuzgun and the organizing team for making this wonderful event possible!
In recognition of her outstanding research achievements, our former group leader Angkana Rüland will be awarded the Leibniz Prize by the DFG. We are proud to have been part of her scientific journey, celebrate with her, and extend our heartfelt congratulations.
At the European Science-Media Hub, our group leader Érika Roldán Roa shared her insights into open science, diversity, gender equality in science, and the gamification of research. Read her inspiring interview!
Research at MPI MiS is as diverse and multifaceted as the people who pursue it. Our Math Planck People portrait series gives a face to our research and introduces the personalities that make up our institute - our scientists & staff. Meet our brilliant minds!

We’re thrilled to continue our series, showcasing the brilliant minds of our institute! Meet Irina Bobrova, a postdoc in Anna Wienhard’s group on Geometry, Groups, and Dynamics. In this portrait, she shares her passion for mathematics and her life in Leipzig.
Barbara Betti and Laura Casabella have been awarded the Gustavo Mezzetti Prize in Italy for the best master's theses in the field of algebra. The two doctoral candidates and friends share an outstanding first place. Congratulations!
We proudly announce that our director Anna Wienhard will be a plenary speaker at the 9th European Congress of Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society taking place in Sevilla from July 15th to 19th, 2024.
Claudia Fevola has been honored by the Max Planck Society as one of its top junior scientists. In recognition of her outstanding scientific achievements during her doctoral studies she has been awarded the 2024 Otto Hahn Medal. Congratulations!
