Guido Montúfar selected as Sloan Research Fellow in Mathematics

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded Guido Montúfar a prestigious two-year $75,000 fellowship for his mathematical machine learning research.

Today the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has announced the 118 scientists that will receive this respected fellowship. It is one of the most established support programs for early-career researchers and has been awarded to scientists in a growing number of disciplines since 1955.

Guido was selected for a Sloan Research Fellowship in Mathematics for his potential to revolutionize his research disciplines: deep learning theory and mathematical machine learning. He is currently an assistant professor of mathematics and statistics and leads the Mathematical Machine Learning Group at UCLA and our institute. With his team, he investigates the geometry of data, hypothesis functions, and parameters to develop the mathematical foundations of deep learning and improve learning with neural networks.

Before joining UCLA’s faculty, he conducted research at PennState Mathematics and in the Information Theory of Cognitive Systems Group at our institute. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Leipzig University as an IMPRS fellow. He is a recipient of an ERC Starting Grant on Deep Learning Theory and an NSF CAREER award on Neural Networks in the Practical Regime. Since 2020 he and his team have organized the Math Machine Learning Seminar MPI MiS + UCLA. Since 2021, he serves as a research mentor at the Latinx Mathematicians Research Community.
