Elke Neuhaus

Published July 02, 2025

Hi, my name is Elke Neuhaus and I am a PhD student in the Nonlinear Algebra group at MPI under the supervision of Irem Portakal.

During my time here since starting my PhD in February 2024, I have been able to learn about various aspects of algebraic geometry such as matrix Schubert varieties, toric geometry and elliptic curves to name a few. Following the name of our research group “Interdisciplinary Frontiers of Algebraic Geometry”, my research interests lie especially in applications of algebra and combinatorics to other subjects like game theory, statistics and quantum chemistry.

I really enjoy the scientific exchange and the atmosphere here at MPI and also Leipzig as a city. Outside of maths I enjoy long hikes and bike rides in the summer and reading and knitting in the winter.
