The 1998 paper “The Variational Formulation of the Fokker--Planck Equation”, authored by our Director Felix Otto together with Richard Jordan and David Kinderlehrer, is the most downloaded paper of the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. On the occasion of the Journal's 50th volume, Felix Otto authored a short piece for the SIAM news, offering some insight as to why the paper continues to spark so much interest today.

In his inspiring contribution, titled The Impact of the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis' Most Popular Paper, Otto summarizes the results obtained and the techniques used in the paper, and at the same time focuses on its relevance to current research directions, like geometric analysis.
