Our postdoc Patrick Heslin has recently been elected to the Young Academy of the European Mathematical Society (EMYA). Congratulations!
“Being appointed as a member of the European Mathematical Society’s Young Academy (EMYA) is an honour. I am grateful to the Irish Mathematical Society for nominating me, and I see this as an opportunity to represent my country and advocate for my peers," Patrick explains.
EMYA aims to support and promote early-career mathematicians in Europe, strengthen their role within the mathematical community, and enhance their career opportunities. A key goal is to serve as a voice for young researchers, and Patrick looks forward to contributing to this mission. Ultimately, EMYA seeks to improve the working conditions and career prospects of emerging mathematicians now and in the future.
About Patrick Heslin:
Patrick Heslin has been a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Székelyhidi's Applied Analysis group since September 2024. Originally from Leitrim, Ireland, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Misiołek.
His research focuses on the geometry and analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations arising in fluid dynamics and other areas of mathematical physics. More specifically, he studies the Riemannian geometry of diffeomorphism groups equipped with right invariant metrics of Sobolev-type.
Former group leader Angkana Rüland, renowned for her work in applied analysis, is to receive the New Horizons Prize from the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, a $100,000 accolade. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
Leipzig University professor Dejan Gajic has been awarded a €1.5 million ERC Starting Grant for his research on the dynamics of black holes. The grant will boost research at the Center for Mathematical Physics, the joint venture between Leipzig University and MiS.
Sayan Mukherjee is one of 12 top international researchers to receive Germany's most valuable research award, the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship. On the occasion of the award ceremony, we also published an interview with his colleagues from the Learning and Inference Research Group at MiS
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to science and education in Vietnam, our director Jürgen Jost has been named an honorary doctor of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Sincere congratulations!
Research group leader and University of Bielefeld Mathematics professor Benjamin Gess received a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for his research in Stochastic partial differential equations. Gess and his team will be using the 2 million Euro, 5-year funding to reveal which universal properties connect stochastic systems.
Our director Anna Wienhard is the recipient of the Hector Science Award for her outstanding research in mathematics. Founder Dr h.c. Hans-Werner Hector inducted her into the Academy, which now comprises 28 Hector Fellows who are jointly committed to interdisciplinary top-level research and to promoting young scientists in Germany.
Great news at the start of the new year comes from our postdoc Samantha Fairchild. She was awarded a two-year Walter Benjamin Fellowship of DFG (German Research Foundation) for her research on the “Analysis of discrete sets arising from geometry” - a perfect opportunity to run her own research program at our institute.
