Your Voice in the PhD Community

Following the recent election, Angelo El Saliby, Leon Sebastian Duensing, and Sanjay Puneet Verma will serve as the new PhD representatives of our institute. We congratulate them and wish them every success in their new role.

Over the coming year, Angelo, Leon and Sanjay will represent the PhD community, promote exchange among doctoral researchers, and help strengthen connections across all research groups. Their goal is to improve PhD life at the institute and create opportunities for a lively and inspiring community beyond research.

Your PhD representatives: 

Angelo El Saliby started their PhD in October 2025 under the supervision of Dani Kaufman and Irem Portakal. They are very passionate about workers' rights and societal issues. They hope to help improving the conditions of doctoral students throughout the PhDnet and the N^{^2} network.

Angelo represents our institute in the Max Planck Society’s PhD network which is a platform for exchange among the at about 5000 doctoral students working at all Max-Planck-Institutes.

Leon Duensing joined the institute this year in Jürgen Jost's group of Geometry and Complex Systems. He is interested in applying geometrical and topological methods to machine learning. He also likes to swim and play theater. In the coming year he hopes to contribute in building bridges between the research groups.

Sanjay Verma is a PhD student in the Pattern Formation, Energy Landscapes, and Scaling Laws group of Felix Otto. He joined the IMPRS program a few months ago and is primarily interested PDEs, fluid dynamics, and new computational tools. Outside of math he enjoys trying new food, cycling, playing tennis, and watercolor painting, and he hopes to plan fun activities around some of these things.
