Alexander Elzenaar
I am a PhD student interested in the sudden appearance of geometry in complex mathematical structures. At MPI MiS I am under the supervision of Michael Joswig, and I am thinking about geometric structures at the boundary of algebraic geometry, convex geometry, and matroid theory. I also have interests in knot theory, low-dimensional topology, dynamics, and number theory: usually in these areas my thoughts are related to geometry, deformations, and visualisation (occasionally with a computer).
I am originally from Upper Hutt, New Zealand and my non-mathematical interests include hiking, gravel cycling, and the visual and literary arts; in the past I have also studied classical literature and history, including a year of study of the ancient Egyptian language.
