Mareike Dressler

Mareike Dressler is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Convexity, Optimization, and Data Science research group at MPI MiS. She completed her PhD at the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main in 2018 under the supervision of Thorsten Theobald. After graduating, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) participating in the semester program on Nonlinear Algebra and then a S.E.W. Assistant Professor at University of California, San Diego.

Her research is in real and computational algebraic geometry and polynomial and convex optimization. She also works on problems intersecting with other areas like convex geometry, matrix and tensor computation, applied algebraic geometry, algebraic and geometric combinatorics, and real analysis. She is generally interested in questions involving nonnegativity of polynomials, (polynomial) optimization methods, and ranks of matrices and tensors. In particular, she enjoys studying sums of nonnegative circuits (SONCs), a recently developed nonnegativity certificate especially useful for sparse polynomials.

Outside of math, Mareike loves being outdoors: hiking, swimming, or just taking long walks. She also enjoys playing the piano, board games, cooking, and traveling the globe.
