Timo de Wolff

Timo de Wolff is an Associate Professor for Applied Algebra at TU Braunschweig. He graduated in 2013 from Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, Germany under supervision of Thorsten Theobald. Before he started his position at TU Braunschweig in 2019, he held positions at Goethe University, Saarland University, Texas A&M University, and TU Berlin. Since 2017, he is a member in the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation DFG.

Mathematically, his key area of research is nonnegativity if real polynomials and polynomial optimization; in particular SONC certificates which he developed jointly with Sadik Iliman. But he also works in various other topics in algorithmic and applied algebra, for example chemical reaction networks, and problems in theoretical computer science. In the recent past, he also started to work on machine learning.

When he is not on his daily tasks, he spends a lot of his time with Die Junge Akademie (German National Young Academy) at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. There, he is an elected member 2019-24 and conducts scientific outreach, interdisciplinary research, and discussions on science related topics in politics and society.
