Darwinian evolution in biological systems in determined by the interplay of mutation and selection, i.e., the generation of effectively random generation of variation and the differential propagation of variants in time. These basic mechanism are also at work in the evolutions of human languages. We therefore ask to what extent models biological evolution and the corresponding bioinformatics approaches can be carried over, in a suitably modified form, to problems in linguistics.
