Paul Görlach is a PhD student at MPI MiS. He is interested in algebraic geometry with an eye to applications, especially in the context of symmetry structures and techniques from birational geometry.
He has recently finished a project that deals with brain imaging, addressing the problem of extracting rotation-invariant characteristics from MRI measurements. Mathematically speaking, this is achieved by constructively studying rationality of quotients of symmetric tensor spaces under the orthogonal group.
Currently, Paul is working on using techniques from toric degenerations and Cox rings in the context of polynomial interpolation problems.
