José Alejandro Samper

José Alejandro Samper is a postdoctoral fellow in the Nonlinear Algebra group at MPI. He comes from Colombia where he started learning combinatorics with Federico Ardila. Then he moved to Seattle to pursue a PhD at the University of Washington under the supervision of Isabella Novik. After that, he spent time as a postdoc in ICERM and the University of Miami.
His mathematical interests are in algebraic, geometric and topological combinatorics. He especially enjoys thinking about simplicial complexes, matroids, polytopes and convex bodies in the various mathematical contexts where they arise. He is currently finishing a few projects concerning the unreasonable effectiveness of endowing a matroid with a linear order and hopes to explore new territories while at MPI.
After his year in Leipzig, he will join the Mathematics Department of PUC Chile, in Santiago, as an Assistant Professor.
