Simon Telen

Simon Telen is a PhD student at KU Leuven in Belgium under the supervision of Marc Van Barel. He has visited the MPI several times during his PhD and will be a postdoc at the institute starting October 2020.
Simon's PhD research is on solving systems of polynomial equations numerically. He likes to use eigenvalue computations for this, as well as homotopy continuation methods. He is especially interested in the connections between toric geometry and solving what is called `sparse' polynomial systems. Recently, his focus has been on using homogeneous coordinates on toric varieties for dealing with challenging numerical situations in a robust way. Next to polynomial system solving, toric varieties and their applications, Simon likes tensors, function approximation and tropical geometry.
Outside of mathematics, he enjoys spending his time playing and listening to music, attending concerts and festivals, hiking, running or skiing.
