August 9, 2018

Leon Zhang is a PhD student at University of California, Berkeley, working under the supervision of Bernd Sturmfels. He is visiting MPI MiS for the second half of 2018.

His research focuses on algebraic and tropical geometry, especially algorithmic aspects and applications. Recently he studied the explicit structure of unit groups of certain families of very affine curves with Sameera Vemulapalli and Justin Chen. These unit groups have relevance in tropical geometry, where they can be used to construct an intrinsic tropicalization from which all other tropicalizations can be recovered.

Leon is currently working on an algorithm to compute min- and max-convex hulls in buildings, which he plans to implement in the open-source software Polymake. He also has a keen interest in algebraic and tropical statistics.
