Kinetic formulation for nonlinear conservation laws

Abstract

The question of finding a right formulation for conservation laws which has a good physics meaning and a convenient shape for doing mathematics remains an open one, linked with the 6th problem of Hilbert. We will first discuss an entropy definition and then a kinetic one that appear to be equivalent, focusing on the Burgers equation and on a recent application.
