Mathematical problems of the Reliability of the Finite Element Method

Abstract

The lecture will present new results on computation of lower and upper bounds of the error in the computed data of interest. The bounds are guaranteed, are not asymptotic and can be made arbitrarily close by cheap iterations. The talk will also mention the Sleipner Accident where insufficiently accurate finite element computations led to the collapsing of drilling tower in the Nord See.
