Abstract

We are excited to announce the establishment of a new "Mathematics Lab" at our institute, an initiative that will foster innovative and interdisciplinary research in mathematics. We cordially invite you to join this initiative.

The Lab is envisioned as a hub dedicated to innovative and interdisciplinary research in mathematics with three pillars: experiments and computation in mathematics, serving as a think tank, and outreach. Our aim is to create a space that not only advances mathematical research but also highlights its beauty and practical relevance in our world.

The key focus areas of the Mathematics Lab are:

  1. Experiments and Computation: The lab will explore computational and experimental techniques for advancing research in mathematics.
  2. Think Tank: The lab will serve as a think tank to explore the growing interaction between mathematics and AI/machine learning at various levels (mathematical foundations, use of mathematical structures in AI, use of AI in mathematical research), as well as the appearance and the use of mathematics in other sciences.
  3. Outreach: The lab will be involved in Outreach activities of the institute, including school workshops or visits, high school students (BeLL), internships, REUs, public talks, cooperation with museums, artists, and exhibitions. Through its outreach activities, the lab brings mathematics to the public and opens up new ways to engage with mathematics.

The Mathematics Lab will serve as an overarching structure for activities at MPI MiS, bringing researchers with interests in these areas together across the entire institute.

We would like to invite all of you to take part in this initiative. Please join us for our first Mathematics Lab Meeting to discuss our vision, goals, and how you can contribute.

If you can't attend in person please email Dia Taha at diaaeldin.taha@mis.mpg.de to get the Zoom link.
