Abstract

In most situations of modern materials science, several scales have to be considered sequentially, or concurrently. This raises several fundamental questions and give rise to challenging computational issues. This is especially true when the materials considered have no simple, regular structure. The talk will overview some mathematical (and numerical) questions in this area. The level of exposition will be deliberately kept elementary. The flavour of the mathematical ingredients and techniques will be given, the focus being on the questions raised rather than the answers provided.
