In this paper we prove that on a closed oriented surface, flat metrics determined by holomorphic quadratic differentials can be distinguished from other flat cone metrics by the length spectrum, or equivalently, the Liouville current.
In-depth understanding of the bending behavior of a membrane is often considered essential, e.g. for explaining cellular, as well as certain material properties and can lead to advancements in the fields of biology and materials science. In this thesis, two classical approaches to modeling a membrane are explored - a deterministic and a stochastic one.
We first consider a variational model for a membrane that is strongly attracted to two walls. We model the energy of such a membrane as an integral functional with a double-well potential (modeling the attraction to the two walls) and a |∆|^2-term (modeling the bending energy). We characterize optimal membrane shapes by means of Gamma-convergence.
In the stochastic setting, a membrane is modeled via a Gaussian process with covariance function being the Green's function of the Bi-Laplace operator. We show how this approach is linked to the variational model considered above via Large Deviations Principles. The incorporation of various constraints is also discussed.

Interacting particle systems are countable systems of locally interacting Markov processes and are often used as toy models for stochastic phenomena with an underlying spatial structure. Even though the definition of an interacting particle system often looks very simple and the major technical issues of existence and uniqueness have long been settled, it is in general surprisingly difficult to say anything non-trivial about their behavior. Some of the main challenges deal with the long-time behavior of the systems. Because of the possible non-uniqueness of the time-stationary distribution the analysis is very delicate and various techniques have been developed to study limit theorems or attractor properties. One particular technique that will play a major role in this talk is due to Richard Holley and involves using the relative entropy functional with respect to some specification $\gamma$ as a Lyapunov function for the measure-valued differential equation that describes the time evolution of the system in the space of measures. We first explain the general idea behind the method on the simple example of a continuous time Markov chain on a finite state space and then discuss how one can extend it to irreversible interacting particle systems in infinite volumes.
In any Coxeter group the conjugate of elements in its Coxeter generating set are called reflections. The length of an element with respect to this expanded generating set is its reflection length.
This talk is about an explicit formula conjectured by Petra Schwer to compute reflection length in affine Coxeter groups. The authors bachelor thesis provides proofs for the conjectured formula in affine Coxeter groups of rank one and two and for one inequality in arbitrary rank. The general setting is unsolved so far.
In this talk, we consider example groups of rank one and two and develop the necessary notions as well as the statement of the conjecture alongside these examples. We see how the conjectured formula captures some of the groups’ structure and how it simplifies computation of reflection length.
We study the fractional Hardy inequality on the integers. We prove the optimality of the Hardy weight presented by Ciaurri/Roncal and hence affirmatively answer the question of sharpness of the constant.
(The thesis just provides criticality of the Hardy weight (which also already shows sharpness of the constant). We were now able to show that the weight is also null-critical, i.e., there is no minimizer, and is thus optimal. We are furthermore at the final stages of making this result publishable.)
Structured population models are partial differential equations used for, e.g., describing the evolution of cell, animal or human populations with respect to a specific structuring variable. Such models are classically studied in the space of Lebesgue integrable functions. However, in this setting, we might deal with non-existence of a (global) solution or emergence of singularities. An idea to solve these problems is to formulate the model in measures. We will introduce the general setting and present an existence result for a type of structured population models derived in the book “Spaces of Measures and their Applications to Structured Population Models” from Düll, Gwiazda, Marciniak-Czochra and Skrzeczkowski. In the end, we will look at a specific structured population model describing leukemia to show how it works in practice.
