Slow deposition of granular matter on tables and other obstacles

Abstract

First we follow the approach of the BCRE model for slow deposition (no inertia, no wind forces) of granular matter under the influence of gravity: We distinguish a standing and a rolling layer with exchange between these layers depending on whether the actual slope exceeds the angle of repose. Then we consider equilibrium configurations, in particular those which can be characterized by a maximum volume property. These can be seen as solutions to certain boundary and obstacle problems for the eikonal equation. The latter can be characterized by variational principles, by Perron methods, and by using transport paths.
