The hyperbolic geometry of the worst approximable rational numbers

Abstract
We show how basic tools from the decorated Teichmüller theory of punctured surfaces can be applied in Diophantine approximation. In particular, we will use this approach to describe the rational numbers with approximation constant at least 1/3 in terms of geodesics in the modular torus.
