Center for artificial intelligence approved

Published May 23, 2022

We are very proud to be part of the Konrad Zuse School of Embedded Composite AI (SECAI) which will be established under the lead of TU Dresden as one of three centers for artificial intelligence in Germany. In addition to outstanding research, the project aims to enable young talents to enjoy excellent, research-based education across disciplines and locations and, at the same time, an application-oriented opportunity for career paths in business.

The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademische Austauschdienst DAAD), with funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is expanding its support for young AI researchers in Germany and recently approved the establishment of three Konrad Zuse Schools for Artificial Intelligence. The schools are intended to establish networks of science and industry to attract excellent young AI researchers from around the world. The BMBF is initially providing 24 million euros over the coming years.

The project not only promotes outstanding research but also teaching in the field. The centers, named after the computer inventor Konrad Zuse, have the task of attracting highly talented German and international graduates to study AI at a master's degree or Ph.D. level and bind them to Germany as a research location in the long term. The schools will provide continuous funding and support supplemented by a comprehensive mentoring concept. The project will start in July.

The research will focus on the following topics: the development of new, hybrid AI methods that combine statistical and symbolic approaches (“composite”), the linking of AI with microelectronics and smart medical devices (“embedded”), and digital medicine.

Provider of SECAI is the Technical University of Dresden in close cooperation with its partner institutions in science and economy: the University of Leipzig, the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden, the Center for Tactile Internet with Human-In-The-Loop, the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health, the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing (ZIH) and our MPI.

A portrait and detailed information on the concept and research of the SECAI Konrad Zuse School of Embedded Composite AI will follow soon.
