In October, our former research group leader André Uschmajew moved to the University of Augsburg, where he took over the chair of Mathematical Data Science. We would like to congratulate him and wish him all the best in his new position.
André Uschmajew studied mathematics at TU Berlin, where he also completed his dissertation. After a postdoctoral stay at EPF Lausanne, Switzerland, he was a Bonn Junior Fellow Professor at the Institute for Numerical Simulation of the University of Bonn and the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics from 2014 to 2017. Since 2017, he was the head of the research group “Tensors and Optimization” at MPI MiS.
His research focuses on low-rank matrix and tensor approximation, with emphasis on numerical tensor calculus, optimization methods, as well as algebraic and geometric aspects. At his new position in Augsburg, he plans to expand research on low-rank models and multilinear optimization in the context of data science and nonlinear approximation. His goal is to obtain a deeper mathematical understanding of multilinear models for tensors and new insights into their use in high-dimensional problems and modern applications.
