On November 27, our director Felix Otto will be awarded the Cantor Medal by the German Mathematical Society DMV. We cordially invite you to join us for the ceremony and presentation of the DMV's most prestigious scientific award.
The Cantor Medal is the most important scientific award of the DMV. This silver medal, awarded in honor of the DMV’s first chairman, Georg Cantor (1845–1918), is presented every two to four years by the DMV presidium based on the recommendation of an external selection committee. The award includes €4,000 in prize money, along with an engraved pure silver medal and a certificate.
The 2024 Cantor Medal is awarded to our director, Prof. Dr. Felix Otto. His research interests include, among other things, the calculus of variations and partial differential equations, which have numerous applications. For example, differential equations can be used to describe the growth of a population, such as a virus. In physics, they help to mathematically describe the movements of fluids and clouds. Pattern formation processes in nature can also be described with differential equations. For these purposes, Otto develops new mathematical methods and tools.
