Mathematical highlights of this year's International Women's Day

Today's International Women's Day is a day not only to celebrate women's achievements and increase visibility, but also to call out inequality. This year's motto is choose to challenge and it calls each and everyone of us into action to forge a gender equal world.

The Max Planck Society highlights female pioneers of science in a column, where contemporary Max Planck female researchers talk about historic female science pioneers, who persevered despite social stigmatization. Minerva fast track fellow Noémie Combe talks about her fascination with Emmy Noether and how her determination can inspire young women to follow a STEM career today.

We would also like to point out that the EWM and MATH+ are organizing a panel discussion on gender balance in mathematics in connection with the movie Picture a Scientist. The discussion will take place on March 11 from 19:30–21:00 CET. The panel will start with a 30 min talk by K. Clancy on sexual harassment (and more generally gender gap). It will be followed by a panel discussion involving her as well as Ingrid Daubechies, Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb, Bernd Sturmfels, and Andrea Walther.
