Let’s Celebrate Women and Girls in Science

When it comes to science gender, race or nationality don't make any difference on how much one can contribute.

The EWM was founded in 1986 and shapes policy making and strategic positioning to promote the role of women in mathematics and offers direct support to its 400+ members. The association offers a very supportive community of which we are proud to now be officially a part of.

For February 11, a variety of young female PhD students and postdocs will introduce their research work in the fields of Pure and Applied Mathematics and Data Sciences. The event will be introduced by a talk by Professor Susanna Terracini of the Department of Mathematics “G. Peano” of the University of Turin on the current role of women in Mathematics, and will be closed by an interactive workshop held by MSc. Federica Lucco-Castello titled “Origami and Mathematical thinking”.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on 11 February, is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. This Day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace. This day aims at raising awareness on the issue celebrating women’s excellence in science and reminding the international community that science and gender equality have to advance hand-in-hand to address major global challenges and achieve all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda.

• This year’s celebration of the Day will address the theme “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19”, and gather experts working in fields related to the pandemic from different parts of the world.

• The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) invite you to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by joining them for a film screening of “Picture a Scientist” followed by a keynote speech and a panel discussion.
