Sonja Petrovic is an Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on the interplay between commutative algebra and statistics, where the interaction goes two ways. She develops and analyzes statistical models for discrete relational data such as networks. She also studies randomized algorithm approaches to computational algebra problems whose expected runtimes are much lower than the well-known worst-case complexity bounds, develops probabilistic models to study average and extreme behavior of algebraic objects, and uses machine learning to predict and improve the behavior of algebraic computations. She was one of the organizers of the "Summer School on Randomness and Learning in Non-Linear Algebra" at MPI in July 2019.
Apart from mathematics and statistics, Sonja loves living in Chicago and watching its spectacular sunsets, traveling (still, even with small kids in tow!), playing bass guitar, biking, improvisational cooking, some easy rock climbing, and swimming in Lake Michigan (in the summer only).
