María Ángeles García-Ferrero, postdoc in the research group “Rigidity and Flexibility in PDEs” is one of the laureates of this year’s Vicent Caselles Award. This Spanish Science Award goes to outstanding young mathematicians recognizing creativity and originality of their scientific results. María Ángeles is especially honored for her PhD thesis studying geometric problems in partial differential equations and the development of global approximation theorems to answer them.
The Vicent Caselles Awards are donated by the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) and the BBVA Foundation based on the Spanish bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria to celebrate the value of mathematics as “the language of science, knowledge and rationality”. They were born five years ago with a triple objective: to recognize scientific achievements, to encourage the excellence and talent of young researchers in mathematics and, through them, to increase visibility and importance of mathematics and those who develop it. During the award ceremony the founders underlined that mathematics, as reflected in the research of young people awarded with the Vicent Caselles prize, are essential to expand and provide a foundation for scientific culture.
María Ángeles García-Ferrero is one of six laureates. Her research focuses on the study of geometric problems in partial differential equations and the development of global approximation theorems to answer them. Her most outstanding results provide a complete approximation theory for the solutions of parabolic equations and their application to the study of hot spots and isothermic surfaces.
